Lemons from Blanca

Blanca, belonging to the Ricote Valley, was one of the first places of cultivation lemons in Spain. In 1579, Pedro de Vega of this village traveled in mules’ train to Pastrana (Guadalajara) to sell in that town his lemons. A distance of 400 km!

The municipality of Blanca takes care for its own well-being and for that of the future generations. So it has taken measures to protecting its natural environment. The park called "el parque de las cuevas" has 100.000 m2. Walking there is an excellent way to enjoy the scenery and atmosphere of the slow movement of the Ricote Valley.

In the foreground in the distance we see a former granary in the Darrax hamlet exactly between the villages Abaran and Blanca. It is the only Moorish granary known in Spain. On the very top of the mountain this rectangular granary was divided into several areas where grain was stored.

Preparing the esparto braids

Since centuries Blanca has been involved in the handmade manufacturing of carpets made from esparto. Esparto grass rugs are usually round or rectangular. The manufacturing is done by women, usually in teams of 2 or 3 women who talk and sing while they work; while their strong hands move with energy and precision.

Blanca's Summer Festivals, 2016

In August, Blanca celebrates its summer festivals and again in honor of their patron San Roque. This changes the decor, mona (sweet bread) by bulls. Their bull running, declared as Regional Tourist Interest,  is undoubtedly the most important day for all inhabitants of Blanca.

Their bull running is a tradition that has been held for over three hundred years and it is a unique event in the region of Murcia.

During the morning, the atmosphere that exists along the entire bull running route is of an inordinate joy;  dances and parades of brass bands, encourage all to join the festival. A festival, where everyone is well received.

The Township of Blana celebrates their festivals in honor of San Roque from 6 to 16 August. To download the festival program, please click here
